World Wetland Day

We’ll take some time to observe World Wetland Day a day early this year - Sunday 1st February 2-4pm.

Take a leisurely walk or bike ride along the rail trail and help us celebrate World Wetlands Day at Orkney Wetland.

The wetland will be open to view from the platform, with committee members and volunteers on site to share what’s been happening since construction wrapped up. We’ll also have Jo Wakelin running a hands-on seed-planting demonstration – plus you can take some seeds home to grow for future planting at the wetland 🌱

And to finish things off… a real fruit ice cream on us back at the Golf Club🍦

🚗 Please park at Omakau Golf Course
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A great afternoon out for the whole family

*If the weather is poor, we will host World Wetland Day at Omakau Golf Club.

Planting at the Wetland

11 keen planters joined us on a typical blustery Spring day back in October to have 200 carex planted at the Wetland which had been grown from seed by people across the catchment. Many hands make light work – all it took was 45 minutes.  It’s great to get these plants in the ground and help crowd out the pesty weeds!

The community momentum we have built is strong, and everyone is committed to carrying this work forward. Volunteers have continued pest monitoring, planting and water testing. We were fortunate to attract funding from the ORC’s Eco Fund and this is helping to maintain the wetland this season.  We’ll continue to seek funding from other sources to carry out weed control, enhance habitat for Galaxiids, and support more school involvement.

We’ll continue to spread the word about the good work being done here in our catchment on our Facebook page, sharing updates, opportunities to get involved, and ongoing achievements.
