The Manuherekia Voice: Autumn - Thomsons Catchment

World Wetland Day

We celebrated World Wetland Day on Sunday 1st February and enjoyed chatting with the 30+ attendees on what the wetland means to them. Jo Wakelin of Koinga Consulting was there to run through a workshop on planting carex seedlings - six people took away kits to grow plants for later planting at the wetland.

Committee Catch Up

The committee and volunteers caught up on Friday 27th March as part of a yearly review, this including taking levels of the wetland and making sure we schedule important maintenance activities of the traps.

The wetland is looking fantastic (despite the fantastic weed growth this season!).  We were fortunate to receive monies from the Otago Regional Council’s ECOFund last year – this provided for two rounds of plant release by Habitat Restorations Aotearoa and five visits from Whitestone Contracting to undertake spraying of other areas.

We are busy writing our final report for the ECOFund at present and will be submitting an application for the next year.

Our very dedicated team of volunteers visit the wetland every Friday maintaining our traps to keep the predators out of the wetland and keeping the willow and poplar seedlings at bay.  They’re a wonderful group and Orkney wetland would not be where it is without them! Over the past six months, we’ve had 80 plus hours of volunteer time working on the wetland. Thanks to each and every volunteer, whether it be growing new plants for the wetland at home, regular visits to do bird watching or trapping activities, willow control or spraying weeds, it all counts.
