German Hill

Landowner: Tiff and Bevan McKnight

The Waiora Manuherekia project supported the restoration of the German Hill wetland on Merino Ridges farm with a strong focus on ecological outcomes. A major component of the work was targeted weed control, with extensive spraying carried out to reduce invasive species that threaten native habitat. We also provided fencing materials, enabling the landowners to construct stock-exclusion fencing that now protects the waterways and wetland margins from grazing pressure.

To stabilise the area and enhance biodiversity, riparian plantings were established along the waterway edges. These plantings will reduce sediment and nutrient runoff, improve water quality, and create habitat for native birds and aquatic life. Together, these actions strengthen the resilience of the German Hill wetland and contribute to the wider health of the Poolburn catchment.
