As part of the Waiora Manuherekia project, we supported the restoration of a unique wetland located on an old coal mine site. Because the wetland also provides drinking water for the landowners, weed control was carefully managed through manual removal by the landowners rather than spraying. To protect the area, we installed nearly one kilometre of fencing to exclude stock, helping to reduce pressure on the fragile ecosystem. In addition, we carried out small-scale native planting in pockets, designed to encourage natural regeneration now that stock has been excluded. Together, these efforts are helping to restore the wetland’s health and resilience for the future.
