As part of our Waiora Manuherekia project, we worked alongside the landowners of Matakanui Station, our support focused on providing fencing materials across three wetlands on the property, with the landowners completing the construction themselves. At this wetland, Chatto Creek, this meant installing 747m of new fencing, ensuring that stock are now permanently excluded from the waterways.
One of the main challenges at this site was the presence of crack willow, which was sprayed via drone. By controlling the willows this should allow natural regeneration of native species and improve biodiversity within the wetland.
Through these combined efforts, Chatto Creek is now better protected and set on a path towards long-term ecological health.
